Funny you ask, its kind of the way I see things ^^
Like... I had the skirt originally a dark purple. Then I accidentally shaded it a little too light, and it looked like bright pink to me. So I added bright pink, and somehow my mind added orange to it, and after orange came yellow!
And then when I added that orange on the frills, I had originally only had just a blue background, but then that lighting on the frills with the orange didn't make any sense, so I added orange to the bottom of the background, which looked like fire to me so I made it look warmer and more like fire.
So after that, I started adding warmth to the rest of the picture, and I added the blue of the BG on the character, which made a sort of purple on the pink spots, so I put purple in the sky, too ^^

I hope that helps!
It was good for me to put that into words...
Oh, and a LOT of it is coincidence, like accidentally choosing a color that wasn't intended, but ended up looking better and closer to another color and just embracing that "mistake".
